We&#039;re already attracting investment and can become a powerhouse by exporting agricultural technology.&quot;"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>The BIOTECH ATTRACTION Congress debate on the &#039;Mapping the Agrotech Ecosystem&#039; document sheds light, such as the existence of a significant network of 850 startups focused on Andalusia, Catalonia, Valencia and Madrid, leading driving industries and a large network of universities, technology parks, incubators and hubs, but also shadows: &quot;there is a lack of connection, size and incentives, and too much bureaucracy.&quot;<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>ICEX, Cajamar and BIOVEGEN agree that Spanish agricultural technology is promising, attracts venture capital and the headquarters of multinationals and is awaiting regulation of genetic editing (NGT&#039;s) but warn that we cannot &quot;continue living off the lowest labor cost - a 19% lower than in the EU - because our non-European competitors are cheaper.&quot;<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Madrid, 7-10-2025.- <\/strong>The debate between those responsible for the document &quot;Mapping the Agrotech Ecosystem in Spain&quot; was the center of attraction at the BIOTECH ATTRACTION Congress promoted by BIOVEGEN during the last edition of Fruit Attraction. Around 300 researchers and entrepreneurs filled the Fruit Forum, where some of the conclusions of this document sponsored by ICEX and Cajamar were presented, a true audit of the Spanish technological industry dedicated to agriculture. Its great potential was exhibited: the aforementioned work has identified a dense network composed of 850 startups - focused on Andalusia (181), Catalonia (126), the Valencian Community (110) and Madrid (109); A powerful research platform with 50 specialized universities, 20 mixed or private technology centers and parks, at least 24 sectoral and\/or regional clusters, 7 technology platforms\u2014such as BIOVEGEN itself, dedicated to biotechnology\u2014regional innovation hubs, and incubators that help companies emerge and grow from their first patents or plant varieties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-23930 lazyload\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" data-src=\"https:\/\/biovegen.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/foto-1-1024x768.jpg\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/biovegen.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/foto-1-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/biovegen.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/foto-1-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/biovegen.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/foto-1-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/biovegen.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/foto-1-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/biovegen.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/foto-1-2048x1536.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/biovegen.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/foto-1-16x12.jpg 16w, https:\/\/biovegen.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/foto-1-600x450.jpg 600w\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>More than 300 people, researchers and agricultural entrepreneurs, attended the BIOTECH ATTRACTION Congress organized by BIOVEGEN during the last edition of Fruit Attraction.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>But Spain also boasts leading industries\u2014such as olive oil, citrus fruits, and pork\u2014that act as &quot;engines&quot; of a powerful agri-food sector that exports almost 201% of our country&#039;s goods and whose productivity has been growing (0.91% of our country&#039;s annual GDP), above the rates of our neighbors. And, as the report highlights and was addressed during the debate, there is significant interest from seed giants\u2014such as Bayer, Syngenta, RijK Zwaan, and Sakata\u2014who are already based in our country and have recently collaborated with Spanish firms. Not to mention venture capital, which in the last two years (2024 and 2025) has been involved in a multitude of merger operations, including in R&amp;D, through funds and SCRs. A situation that, according to BIOVEGEN&#039;s director, Gonzaga Ruiz de Gauna, allows us to describe the current state of Spanish agrotech as &quot;boiling. Today we have talent and knowledge, we attract multinationals and foreign capital, but tomorrow, when we consolidate this sector, we can become a powerhouse by exporting our agricultural technology.&quot;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These were some of the reflections and data that came up during the roundtable discussion led by In\u00e9s Luc\u00eda, ICEX&#039;s investor manager, and which also included Juan C. G\u00e1zquez, deputy director of Cajamar Innova\u2014representatives of the entities sponsoring the report\u2014as well as Gabino S\u00e1nchez, business director of Hudson River Biotechnology (HRB, the Netherlands), one of the companies specializing in CRISPR that has opted to work in Spain, and Ruiz de Gauna himself (BIOVEGEN). G\u00e1zquez broke down the areas of specialization of these more than 850 Spanish startups: almost 30% of them are in precision agriculture and livestock farming; another 17% are working on the integration of the management of these productions; 15% are in robotics and mechanization; and almost 12% are in biotechnology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this last sector, the regulatory proposal that the EU began discussing in 2023 is awaited\u2014not without some anxiety\u2014and which still appears to be making no progress and remains in the trilogue phase (Parliament, Council, and European Commission). This proposal is expected to replace the restrictive one on Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) and more flexibly regulate so-called New Gene Editing Techniques (NGTs). To prepare for the takeoff of this sector\u2014focused on plant breeding techniques such as CRISPR\u2014the progress of the nGENIA project was subsequently presented by Amparo Monfort, a researcher at the Centre for Research in Agrigenomics (CRAG)\u2014one of the leading Spanish consortia in this field. S\u00e1nchez, an executive at the Dutch biotechnology company HRB, acknowledged that one of Spain&#039;s attractions remains its labor costs\u201419% lower than the EU average\u2014but also warned about the lack of measures to &quot;retain or attract talent (in the Netherlands, there are significant five-year exemptions for these profiles) and, in general, to reduce the tax burden on R&amp;D investments (which are also heavily subsidized in that country).&quot; G\u00e1zquez (Cajamar), for his part, emphasized that despite the advances, &quot;we still have a research system that is unstructured, insufficiently interconnected, and a small, fragmented business structure,&quot; and therefore called for measures on both fronts in the same vein.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The director of BIOVEGEN\u2014along with the rest of the panelists\u2014concluded from all this that, beyond the privileged natural conditions for the Spanish industry, both geographically and climatically, &quot;agrotech cannot continue to live off lower wages than in the EU because in this same market we already compete with other agricultural sectors, south of the Mediterranean or Latin America, with much cheaper production. R&amp;D is our way to generate value.&quot; He also referred to the Spanish regulatory framework for tax incentives for these investments: &quot;Either it&#039;s unknown or it involves too much bureaucracy, or probably both.&quot;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>AI, digitalization and published Spanish crops<br><\/strong>Before all of this, the conference was inaugurated by Ana Castro, Vice President of Innovation and Transfer at the CSIC, and Jos\u00e9 Pellicer, the host and President of BIOVEGEN. Pellicer outlined many of the contributions that would later be highlighted in subsequent presentations: &quot;We have three disruptive technologies that are accelerating everything and that feed off each other: the drive of Artificial Intelligence, the digitalization of processes, and the precision of new genomic techniques. Agriculture and food cannot, nor do I think it will, turn its back on this revolution that we have already begun.&quot;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition, before the closing ceremony by Carlos de la Cruz, Director of Technology at CDTI Innovation, three successful cases of technology transfer in public-private consortia were discussed, in which these three technologies are present in some way: Jorge Lozano, from IBMCP (UPV-CSIC), presented the use of drugs to increase drought tolerance; Francisco Berm\u00fadez, CEO of Beyond Seeds, presented the results of an operational group, GO Biodif, on nanofertilizers (nutrients and bioactive compounds) for table olives and olive oil; and finally, Pablo Guti\u00e9rrez, from Viveros Integrales El Ejidillo, did the same with the GO Simbioliva project, for the revaluation of alperujo. Finally, IBMCP (UPV-CSIC, Valencia) researcher Jos\u00e9 M. Mulet presented one of the most advanced Spanish CRISPR breeding projects: broccoli varieties that are resistant\/tolerant to water shortages and therefore more flavorful and enriched with amino acids. Despite not yet having the announced legislation, this research is already in the field trial phase (and there are three other gene editing projects also in this phase: two on corn, in Aragon and Andalusia, and another, also in Valencia, on a tobacco plant that produces anatabine instead of nicotine, with anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective properties).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2
