Its application to <strong>crop improvement <\/strong>transcends the scope of research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>decision of the Court of Justice of the EU <\/strong>Subjecting plants improved by genome editing to the complicated and costly European regulation on Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) places this technology outside the usual scope of obtaining and registering plant varieties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This would mean a <strong>hard blow to the expectations and promises that genetic editing offers <\/strong>for the sustainability and competitiveness of a sector like the <strong>agri-food<\/strong>, which is so important in our country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The numerous reactions to this ruling have led to the <strong>EU to carry out a study on its importance and impact within the Union<\/strong>. This <a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/food\/plant\/gmo\/modern_biotech\/new-genomic-techniques_en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">study<\/a>, presented on April 29, points out that there are <em>\u201cstrong indications that the current legislation -GMO- is not suitable for genome editing techniques and their products, and that therefore the legislation must adapt to scientific and technological progress.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Following the presentation of that study, member states will have the opportunity to <strong>propose legislative changes that allow deregulating some types of genome editing<\/strong>, thus correcting the negative consequences that the application of excessively restrictive regulation would have.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Goals<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Review the&nbsp;<strong>state of the art of genome editing&nbsp;<\/strong>and its application to agriculture<\/li><li>Discuss and study the&nbsp;<strong>social, economic and sustainability consequences&nbsp;<\/strong>derived from the implementation of a more restrictive\/permissive regulation<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>To do this, the ethical, legal and competitive derivatives will be analyzed by&nbsp;<strong>experts in different disciplines<\/strong>, including representatives from the fields of research, business, economics and bioethics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The symposium will be organized in&nbsp;<strong>two sessions<\/strong>, a&nbsp;<strong>technical-scientific&nbsp;<\/strong>and another to present and discuss the&nbsp;<strong>legal, ethical and socioeconomic aspects<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Program<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>11:00 a.m. Welcome and opening.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Toni Granell. <em>IBMCP<\/em> <em>(CSIC-UPV)<\/em><\/li><li>Pedro Mier. <em>President of the R&amp;D&amp;I Commission.
