Investigations conducted by Glen Biotech, with the participation of the Generalitat, Elche City Council, University of Alicante (UA) and Trasga have demonstrated an efficiency of 75% by Beauveria bassiana fungus in fighting against red weevil.
The fungus has been introduced in traps located in the exterior perimeter of Elche palm grove (heritage of humanity). The infected insect acts as a fungus vector transmitting it to other weevils. Furthermore, performed tests show that other insects are not affected by the fungus.
Courses will be given soon to maintenance personnel, local/regional police and Nature Protection Service (SEPRONA) guards so they learn how to identify affected palm trees in time to save them.
